Absolutely everyone loves the New Year holidays: beautifully wrapped gifts, shaggy fir trees, burning garlands and fragrant tangerines - this is just a small part of the Christmas miracles. And some people consider long weekends as an opportunity to change their surroundings and relax outside the walls of their home. Where should you go? Traveling around Russia? Or head to distant countries where ? It’s tempting, but not everyone dreams of spending time on a wonderful, but often idle holiday by the sea. Some prefer to be culturally enlightened - get acquainted with famous architectural masterpieces, go to museums, theaters, etc., while others need active recreation in the form of skiing. Let's discuss different options.

In Russia

To have a good rest during the New Year holidays, it is not at all necessary to opt for foreign tours and vouchers, since in Russia there are a huge number of wonderful places where you can spend an unforgettable weekend. Just a few years ago, most Russians sought to travel to other countries for the New Year, because it was not only interesting, but also prestigious.

Now the situation has changed - a weekend in Paris will not surprise anyone, and many people, due to circumstances, simply do not have the opportunity to travel outside their native country - some do not have a foreign passport, and others work in a “secret” job, having signed an agreement to become “ restricted from traveling." Progress does not stand still, which greatly affects the Russian tourism sector - today even the most discerning and comfort-loving citizens can easily find an amazing and wonderful corner where they can go to relax on New Year's Eve. Let's consider the most interesting and unusual options.

St. Petersburg attracts tourists at any time of the year, and holidays, of course, are no exception. Guests come to Northern Palmyra both independently and as part of special tours offered by travel companies. Without a doubt, the latter option is very convenient - you don’t need to think about choosing accommodation and tickets, and a variety of excursion entertainment is usually included in the program. However, not everyone wants to rest according to a schedule, so many cope with organizational issues on their own without any problems.

Travelers who decide to celebrate the New Year in St. Petersburg have access to an incredible amount of entertainment for every taste - you can walk along Nevsky Prospekt, shop in huge shopping centers, attend folk festivals, watch performances by world-famous stars, go to the Mariinsky Theater, a concert or a museum. Weekends spent in the cultural capital of Russia, in January-December, when garlands shine on every window and elegant Christmas trees delight the eye, will be remembered for a long time.

  • -4 / -9 °C. It should be noted that the weather in St. Petersburg is usually windy and the humidity is quite high, which together does not give the most pleasant effect. Therefore, when going on vacation, do not neglect warm clothes, hats and scarves - all this will certainly come in handy.
  • Cost of living: A double standard room in a hotel located in the center of St. Petersburg can be booked quite inexpensively - from 3,000 rubles per night. It is logical that the price will directly depend on the needs of tourists. Those planning a budget holiday prefer to stay in a hostel.
  • How to get there: by car, train or plane. It is worth considering that it is best to purchase plane or train tickets in advance, as they may simply run out towards the end of December.

The capital's New Year holidays are an excellent choice for those who want to get into a real winter's tale, the scale of which will amaze the imagination of any Russian. Moscow will delight its guests with an incredible number of shining Christmas trees installed in every district of the city. However, the Kremlin Christmas tree on Red Square is deservedly the most popular. It is there, on the main Christmas tree of the country, that thousands of people gather on a festive night, wanting to collectively celebrate the New Year with the chimes and wonderful fireworks.

The list could go on for a long time. Of course, you should think through your pastime based on your hobbies and desires. For example, guests of Moscow will most likely like something from the following list:

  • Do you love stores and dream of buying everything you need and not so much? Then you need to visit the colorful and wonderful holiday fairs in the Hermitage Garden, on Red Square and VDNKh. And the open spaces and splendor of the Central Department Store will probably not leave anyone indifferent.

  • Cost of living: A double standard room in hotels located a few kilometers from Red Square costs from 4,100 rubles per day.

While walking around the city, be sure to visit the embankment of Lake Onega - an extraordinary and fabulous view opens from there, and along the street you can see the famous Tree of Wishes, a monument to Peter the Great, as well as other interesting sculptures and compositions that were presented to Petrozavodsk by its sister cities.

Where else can you go? The choice is truly huge... Museums, theaters, parks, ski and sports complexes and even a philharmonic for music lovers. However, you shouldn’t spend all your holidays in the city - outside of it, Karelia has a lot of exciting entertainment. The Sochi Oceanarium is beautiful - thousands of species of unique inhabitants of the deep sea, which can be observed in real time and at arm's length. The specially equipped outdoor pond with yellow fish is especially popular among guests. Why? It’s simple - they are allowed to feed (food is purchased from a machine located nearby). How we relax for the New Year 2016–2017

1. See the polar lights in the Khibiny Mountains

Where: Murmansk region, Kola Peninsula

To take off and fly to the Arctic for the New Year - you have to surprise yourself at least once in your life! And there is something to be surprised by on the Kola Peninsula. Instead of the metro there is an ATV safari, instead of Olivier and champagne there is a salad of sea cod tongues and Lapp grog, and instead of the Blue Light there is the Northern Lights. It is best to stay at the Kuelporr recreation center in the heart of Khibiny. In winter, they organize snowmobile transfers from Kirovsk, so the adventure begins as soon as you step off the ramp or step onto the platform.

How to get there: In winter, direct flights regularly depart from Moscow and St. Petersburg to the Khibiny airport Apatity-Kirovsk. You can also get from Moscow and St. Petersburg to the city of Apatity by train, and from Murmansk to the Kuelporr base - by car in 3.5 hours.

2. Go out

Where: Vienna, Austria

The ball season in Austria opens on November 11 with the Vienna Red Cross Ball in the town hall, and ends only before Lent. The main New Year's ball takes place in the dazzling Hofburg Palace. If you are lucky enough to be there on the night of December 31 to January 1, you will definitely feel like Cinderella or a prince.

To travel back a couple of centuries, hear the stars of the Vienna Opera, dance a square dance and lose your head from champagne, you need to buy a ticket. The cheapest include entrance to the ballrooms and a welcome glass of sparkling wine - they cost 70–155 euros.

Paying 215-385 euros will reserve your seat and enjoy canapés from the buffet. And tickets for 480–680 euros give you the right not only to spin in the Viennese waltz, but also to have a high-society dinner at your own table.

It is cheaper to rent a ball gown or tailcoat. More good way save money - change site. On New Year's dates, dozens of balls are held in Vienna: a live orchestra and a crystal hall in a luxury hotel will leave an impression no worse than the Hofburg, and you will spend less on it. If you extend your vacation in Vienna until the old New Year, for just 57 euros you can get to the colorful Flower Ball in the city hall.

How to get there: Find cheap flights to Vienna and book entry to the Hofburg Ball or another venue.

3. Ride a reindeer early in the morning in Lapland

Where: Lappi province, northern Finland

Often you spend a day talking to people and feel like a squeezed lemon. And if you spend the same time with animals, you’ll be a cucumber! To cheer up and believe in the best again, go visit the reindeer in Lapland - touch the velvet antlers, look for (and find!) understanding in huge kind eyes and ride through the snow in one team.

How to get there: The easiest way to get to one of the reindeer herding farms in Finland is beyond the Arctic Circle. First get to Rovaniemi - the center of the Lappi province. 4. Dance the night away

Where: Koh Phangan Island, Thailand

When was the last time you danced like no one was watching? That time in the shower doesn't count. If you feel like it's time to party so hard that the skies are shy, go to a party Full Moon on the island of Koh Phangan.

This year, beach discos in Asian Ibiza are scheduled for December 25 and 31, with an afterparty on January 1, 2017. These days, on the picturesque beach of Haad Rin Bay, there will be nowhere for a coconut to fall: partygoers from all over the world come to the Full Moon Party to compete in bikini competitions, pour superhuman doses of cocktails into themselves and dance until the morning.

In order not to overpay for a hotel on Koh Phangan, stay away from the beach or even on the mainland: it takes an hour and a half by ferry, but you will save a lot.

How to get there: The closest airport to Koh Phangan is on Koh Samui. From there, ferries and high-speed boats go to Phangan; the journey takes half an hour. The nearest mainland city is Surat Thani, low-cost airlines AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air fly there from Bangkok. The ticket prices of these airlines are a treat in themselves. It turns out almost as cheap as getting from the Thai capital by bus and ferry, only 10 times faster.

5. Finally get on a snowboard

Complaining about the cold, icicles and slush is boring; it’s much more fun to conquer snowy peaks. In expensive Alpine resorts, the world is not like a wedge - go to the Tatras for New Year! In Zakopane, Poland, beginners will bury their fears in ski school lessons, and experts will hone their skills on the highest ski jump in Poland, Wielka Krokiew. In addition to 80 km of ski and snowboard trails, at the resort in the Tatras you will find snowmobiles, husky sleds and an ice skating rink - forget about relaxing on the sofa right away.

While everyone around you is hissing about the crisis, and your boss is just looking for a reason to cut your salary, gather a group of your closest friends and pool your money to book a yacht in Turkey or Greece for the New Year.

A sailing vessel without a crew will cost less than a motorboat with a crew and helmsman. Another way to save on making your dream come true is to join a cruise or deck party: they last several hours and cost the same as regular package excursions. For example, sailing the Aegean Sea in Greece for a whole week on a yacht with five cabins costs 3,700–4,700 euros.

And for a 4-hour New Year's cruise on the Bosphorus, a company of 12 people needs to pay only 500 euros for rent and about 60 euros each for food and drinks.

How to get there: When renting a yacht, you choose the pier from which your journey will begin. If you are planning a short New Year's cruise, check into a coastal hotel - then you will be picked up for the floating party directly from the hotel.

Where: Kamchatka region, Russian Far East

Yes, far away. Yes, it's expensive. But after a helicopter ride through the Valley of Geysers and a dip in the hot springs overlooking the volcano, life will never be the same. It’s difficult to get ready for “this strange place of Kamchatka,” but if you decide, the trip will pay off in full.

Here you can change the course of time: stop rushing and fussing, let go of the past, feel the present and see the future. And also celebrate the New Year twice: local time - first in Russia! - and in your own way.

How to get there: By plane to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and then by helicopter or SUV. Railways not in Kamchatka.

8. Celebrate the New Year at a lighthouse in the middle of the Adriatic

In any case, you will envy yourself.

How to get there: Buy inexpensive air tickets to Croatia, and then by car or bus. The closest airport to the lighthouses is Zadar. It takes a little longer to get from Split airport.

9. Listen to the Universal Mind

Where: art park "Nikola-Lenivets", Kaluga region

Until the age of 43, the only Moscow member of the Leningrad art group “Mitki” Nikolai Polissky painted simple-minded landscapes. And then he took it and turned into the brightest land artist in Russia. Now his futuristic installations in nature appear in France, Italy, Spain and Luxembourg. And in the Nikola-Lenivets park in the Kaluga region you can even live among the whimsical creations of Polissky and other wonderful sculptors and architects.

10. Harness the kite on the crest of a wave

Where: Mui Ne, Vietnam

In one “out to sea” kitesurfers tame two elements at once - air and water. If you also think that this is just fire, get off the ground and head for Vietnam. In the local water sports capital of Mui Ne, there are dozens of schools that teach you how to handle both a kite and waves at the same time. Windchimes Kitesurfing, Kite&Surf and many others employ Russian-speaking instructors. The dry season with strong winds in Mui Ne lasts from approximately November to May, so going here for New Year is the best time.

No wonder: an hour's drive from the country's capital stands Doune Castle, where Winterfell from Game of Thrones was filmed, and not far from the Glencoe Valley stands Bond's family home, Skyfall Lodge.

To see movie places live and find out how the Celts lived before and how the Scots live now, come to Edinburgh. After an elegant Catholic Christmas Pagan Hogmanay is celebrated here with mulled wine and fairs. On New Year's Eve, the Scots organize torchlight processions in Viking costumes, drive out evil spirits with fire and set off fireworks - in a word, they burn in such a way that it is a shame to be left out.

If you are mentally and financially ready for the main trip of your life, cross the line and go to Kenya. Beyond the equator there is a saying: “Better a flamingo by the lake than a bird in the hand.”

How to get there: Find the cheapest flights to Kenya and pre-book safari tours and a room at Giraffe Manor for a radical change of scenery and breakfast with giraffes.

13. Fashion New Year's tale from marzipan

Where: Tallinn, Estonia

The same thing happens when you start a hobby for which you need to be able to do something with your hands. An excellent option is modeling from marzipan. Flights to Spain become cheaper in winter - and if you're a little Spanish at heart, you won't miss this chance. In the squares of Madrid and Barcelona in December and January, noisy fairs take place with street shows and treats that put an end to any diets. But the main feature of the local New Year's bustle is the National Christmas Lottery, which has been running since 1812, more than two centuries ago.

For a Spaniard, missing out on this prank is the same as for a Russian not making a bowl of Olivier for the New Year: loved ones won’t understand, and he himself will feel bad. You can get a lucky ticket in Spain at every step of the way: they are sold in shops, cafes and just on the streets. May you be lucky!

How to get there: Book cheap tickets to Spain for the New Year and catch luck by the tail at every turn.

16. Ride through the underworld by train

Where: Postojna Jama, Slovenia

The mysterious underground labyrinth has every chance of becoming the most... unusual place from those where you have ever celebrated the New Year. Postojna Jama is 20 kilometers of karst grottoes, tunnels and... railway tracks. The rails were laid at the end of the 19th century, but you can still travel through the caves by train. If the speleologist in you awakens, climb into grottoes where ordinary tourists do not have access.

How to get there: From Ljubljana Airport to the Postojnska Jama Caves it is a 45-minute drive, and to the Michelin-starred Krizman restaurant in the Italian countryside is just over an hour.

17. Change your apartment to a castle

Where: Kaliningrad, Russia

How to find yourself in a knight's castle if you have neither a time machine nor a passport? Head to König and stay at the Nesselbeck Hotel. The hotel was built according to the canons of Teutonic fortresses. Inside are fireplaces, high feather beds and antique mirrors. Entertainment includes a beer spa, milk and honey baths, medieval shows, horse riding and carriage rides. And in the modern Nesselbeck Castle there is a restaurant-brewery, where they brew their own variety of amber. Add your cheerful company here - and here it is, a historic New Year! Or a holiday after which many stories will remain. published
