In the last century, during the times of the USSR, men emitted almost the same smell, due to the lack of men's perfume as such. There were only a few colognes, which mainly served a sanitary and hygienic function. Men bought colognes that were affordable and used them after shaving, and some even washed their faces with them.

Wealthier people purchased Soviet colognes for men, which became fashionable. The most sensational at that time was “Chypre”. This was the best cologne for men in the USSR.

Speaking about the most famous men's cologne of the last century, it should be noted that it appeared in the 60s, thanks to inspired perfumers who, impressed by the Cypriot aromas, played with them and gave them the name “Chypre”. It consisted of exotic plants, sandalwood oil and ethyl alcohol.

Quality and durability

Chypre had these two main characteristics because it included:

• real Indian sandalwood;
• bergamot;
• patchouli;
• labdanum;
• oak moss.

A generous gift from India - the USSR in the 50s was several tanks of the highest quality sandalwood oil, enough for several decades of production.

Towards the end of the 80s, Chypre was produced without sandalwood oil, which significantly deteriorated in quality and ultimately ceased to be popular. Modern Chypre is not worth discussing at all, since it has nothing in common with the rare original.

There was another smell that also has its own history. The well-known “Triple Cologne”. He is directly related to Napoleon Bonaparte. During military campaigns, the opportunity to make hygiene procedures were rare, so the French emperor ordered the creation of a product with a triple effect:

• medicinal.

IN Soviet time, it was consumed like vodka, and an example for use was brochures of the 18th century, they specifically described the benefits. It was necessary to add only 30-50 drops of the elixir to water to get rid of migraines and rapid heartbeat. There were other Soviet, men's colognes. One of the cheapest was cologne - “Carnation” - this was suitable for disinfecting wounds and for treating skin, against mosquitoes, and also used to clean toothbrushes, for disinfection. The colognes “Sasha” and “Russian Forest”, also popular at that time, had a less pungent aroma.

Men's colognes of the USSR were not full of variety, 4-5 bottles in a specialized place. Nowadays, stores are replete with various boxes and vials. In the USSR, the cost of a good French fragrance was a third of the average salary. The modern cost, several thousand, is an insignificant part of our average salary. For a modern male, it is easy to purchase almost any fragrance; for a Soviet person, finding perfume was problematic; there were no such products in public stores.

If a young man, for financial reasons, did not give his girlfriend “French perfume” (meaning Climat, of course), then he probably opted for another, more budget hit - “Riga Lilac” by the Latvian brand Dzintars. This scent was also in short supply - it was brought exclusively from the Baltic states.
